Oxymoron. Often heard of it used in figures of speech. While it is defined as:
Expression with contradictory words: a phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together for special effect.
But as it also mean literally as POINTEDLY FOOLISH [Mid-17th century. From Greek oxumōron, a substantial use of the neuter
singular of oxumōros “pointedly foolish,” from oxus “sharp” (source of English oxygen) + mōros “foolish” (source of English moron).]
So much of the meaning of the word and its uses, the bible is rich with paradox (figures of speech like oxymoron) which similarly means inconsistency, absurdity, irony, contradiction, contradiction in terms, enigma, puzzle… for whatever reason we know.
As the word oxymoron has been used in written communication many Christians (more than not) also live a life in oxymoron. We profess our faith and speak boldly to our family, friends and even strangers that we are indeed Christians- followers of Christ Jesus. But the things we say is quite the reverse of what we do.
Paul said it shouldn’t be. Whatever we say must point toward what we do. It is always a daily challenge to everyone…that includes me to walk our talk. Like I always said it is not our reputation that is at stake but Christ Jesus whom we claimed our Lord and Savior.
It somehow seems to be an enigma to what really lies behind the oxymoronic attitude of every Christian (or every man in general). Though there is no explicit reason for such behavior but I believe like in the New Testament… what this kind of people encountered is religion and not God. Forgive me for the strong statement. But given if the person truly encountered God, like those men/women of faith in the bible, as they encountered God, there’s no other response that one could make but worship God in spirit and truth. No reason for one not to listen to God and act his faith regardless of personality, race or religion you are coming from.
But when you seem to look at faith as religion, many facades or pretenses can a person put up to make him look as if he is pious on the faith he profess. But regardless of what we say, no amount of bible studies, ministries we served, charity works we involved can make us more spiritual but only doing the faith that we proclaim.
God can not be mocked. He is either the Lord of all in your life or not at all. We can’t say we love God or we believe in Him and yet only to these areas. Let’s strive to keep away from an oxymoronic life. Let’s live a life of consistency in words and in deeds for the glory of our God.
